Your data on GCSE Greek
The short version: we keep only what’s needed to run your practice. No adverts, no selling data, no tracking cookies. Your teacher can see your practice if you’re in their class; nobody else can. You can ask us to delete everything.

Who we are
GCSE Greek (gcsegreek.co.uk) is a free vocabulary practice site for OCR GCSE Classical Greek, run by Neil Johnson in the UK. If you have a question about your data, email hello@gcsegreek.co.uk.
What we keep
If you’re a student
- Your name and username. If your teacher made your account, it’s whatever they typed. If you made it yourself, it’s your first name and the username you chose.
- Your password — scrambled (“hashed”), so nobody can read it, not even us.
- Your practice: the rounds you play, your answers, and how well you know each word. That’s what makes the practice work.
- Which class you’re in, if any, and which exam list you practise.
- When you use the site (which days), so teachers and we can see whether it’s helping.
- An email address, only if you add one — just for resetting your password. A parent’s email is fine.
- If you made your own account, that you told us you’re 13 or over. We don’t ask for your date of birth.
If you’re a teacher
- Your name, username, password (hashed), an email if you add one, and the classes and students you set up.
What we don’t keep
- No date of birth, address, phone number, photo or school name.
- No advertising, and we never sell or share your data for marketing.
Cookies and analytics
We use one cookie, which keeps you signed in. It does nothing else.
To see how the site is used (for example, how many people visit), we use Plausible, which we run ourselves. It uses no cookies and collects no personal information: no names or usernames, and your IP address is never stored. Pages inside the app are counted by type (like “a class page”), never which class or student.
Who can see your data
- You — everything about your own practice.
- Your teacher, if you’re in their class: your name, username, rounds, scores and how well you know each word. Teachers can only ever see students in their own classes. If you made your own account, your teacher only sees you after you join their class with their code — and you can leave whenever you like.
- The people who run GCSE Greek, only to keep the site working and safe (for example, helping someone who’s locked out).
- Nobody else. Our hosting company, Cloudflare, stores the data for us and isn’t allowed to use it for anything else. If we ever have to share data because the law requires it, we will only share what’s required.
Where it’s kept, and for how long
Your data is stored by Cloudflare in Western Europe. We keep it while your account exists. When an account is deleted, its practice history is deleted with it.
Why we use it
Only to give you the service you (or your school) signed up for: your practice rounds, your progress, and your teacher’s view of their class. For accounts a teacher creates, the teacher and their school decide to use GCSE Greek, and we look after the data for them.
Your rights
- See your data — most of it is on your own pages; email us for a full copy.
- Correct it — change your details on your account page, or ask your teacher or us.
- Delete it — if you made your own account, use “Delete my account” on your account page. If your teacher made it, ask them to remove you, or email us.
- Complain — if you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, tell us first; you can also contact the Information Commissioner’s Office.
Students under 13
You need to be 13 or over to make your own account. If you’re younger, your teacher can add you to their class instead.
For teachers
When you create student accounts, please check your school is happy for you to use GCSE Greek, use first names or initials where you can, and remove students who leave. You can delete a student (and all their history) from their page at any time.
Changes
If we change how we use your data, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
